This is a public service announcement: Do yourself a favor and get a pair of earplugs (even the single use squishy ones) and keep them in your pocket, or purse, or fanny pack… just in case. Better yet, go the extra mile a get a good reusable pair. I got a pair for ten bucks that have a cool metal carrying tube that I can clip to my keys.
Yeah, I know: “If it’s too loud, you’re too old. Yadda, yadda…”. But there are a lot new earplug designs that help you enjoy a good live show while filtering out some of the more harmful frequencies.
Studies have show that depending on your exposure to loud or prolonged noises can result in hearing loss as soon as your early 30’s.
There’s another thing. Keeping a pair of earplugs on my person at all times did a lot for helping me to establish a personal healthcare routine.
For most of my life I was a “power through” kind of person. If I felt a little sick, or sore, or sad, the idea of taking time off or doing something specific to relieve myself seemed counter productive to me. I know… pretty unwise. I thought If I could work through the pain It would just make me stronger. And that might have been the case at certain times of my life. But when it comes to hearing it’s basically just not true.
By learning to take care of my hearing I became more aware of how all this life stuff has an expiration date. And by stuff I mean this meat puppet thing I’m typing the keys with right now. Just like all machines the better you take care of it the better it takes care of you. I learned to savor what my ears took in vs using them as punching bags for my emotions. Now, I am grateful for every vibration they bring me. And it all sounds good to me!
