I have a small record player in my living room that has a 78 speed on it. Those are the old thick records that you might see at the thrift store sometimes.
I recently grabbed some 78’s from our free pile at work, just for fun. It was nice to be able to sit down and listen to music the way my grandparents might have back in the day.
Something about all the hisses and pops made the music sound more romantic. I felt transported to a time when people stretched out on their living room floor and the highlight of the afternoon was to just sit back and listen to a record.
I used to really detest nostalgia. But sometimes when I allow myself to reference more “old school” mechanical or tactical things like cooking, or journaling (handwriting), or playing an old record it helps me to be more present and grounded in my life. Happy New Year!
